Day 12, Monday, April 6, 2015
Started out at Nantahala Outdoor Center and went almost 16 miles to mile marker 153.1. Today was a really tough day as they climbed 4500 feet total to Cheoah Bald. It rained so the views were really limited of the Nantahala River. I know the really tough climb is called "Jacob's Ladder" which is 1/2 mile of short switchbacks up 600 feet. I think there were some slips and falls in the mud. Yeah, that sounds like fun to me.
They didn't get in the shelter as it was full. So they camped outside the shelter and the ground was not flat. Bruce said he would sleep a few hours, slid down the hill a little, wake up, and scoot back up. They cooked in the rain, ate in the rain, set up the tent in the rain. Love close quarters when everything and everyone is wet. Yeah that sounds like fun too.
