Day 16, Friday, April 10
The guys had a rough rainy day. Bruce had several slips on the climb up. I think it rained hard all day long. But they made it into Silers Bald shelter around 4:30 this afternoon. But when I talked to him around 7:00 the rain was finally stopped, or at least for the time being. They are really impressed with the Smoky Mountain shelters. They are all stone instead of wood and have a fireplace. So they had a small fire and were started to dry out. They went about 15 miles today but had planned to go a little further. But the rain got the best of at least one of them so they stopped for the night. Bruce has been so grateful and impressed with Seth being so patient with him. The son is definitely taking care of his old man.
They are considering going into Gatlinburg with a few others to spend the night. They can get a cheap shuttle and cheap bed for the night. They are going to wait and see how the day goes tomorrow. The forecast looks warm and dry. But they still have a 1000 feet climb ahead of them.
Still waiting to see what their trail names are going to be. Even though Bruce doesn't really like it, I think maybe he is "papa", from Seth calling him Pops. Now Seth needs a trail name.
